Agistro Baths

Agistro Baths

Warm wellness tradition in a fascinating landscape

Agistro, a mountain village near the Greek-Bulgarian border, is one of the most atmospheric thermal destinations in Northern Greece. The Byzantine bath dates back to AD 950, while the impressive stone-built hammam dates back to the 14th century. It is the oldest surviving Ottoman bath in Greece and offers a unique experience: thermal water at 40–41°C in a vault of stone, full of steam.
The water of Agistro Baths is considered to be one of the most qualitative in Europe. Traditionally, it is used to relieve musculoskeletal discomfort, arthritis, rheumatism and circulatory issues, while rejuvenating the skin, too.
Agistro, of course, is not limited to the baths. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking, cycling, walking in the forest and exploring the local cuisine. Get to know the traditional rural communities and residents' lifestyles. A visit to Fort Roupel nearby and excursions to the natural landscape of Mount Agistro complement the experience.
This is an ideal starting point if you love quiet hiking trails. At the village there is an organised network of three trails recently created by volunteers in collaboration with the Business Association. The trails spread out at the foot of Mount Agistro and lead to a pristine landscape with oaks and cedars.
Route No. 3, a short and easy hiking route, ends at the mines, with the first opening of the gallery revealing the atmosphere of a forgotten underground world.  Route No. 2 starts from the Baths and extends for about 5 km. It is an ideal choice for a short escape lasting 1-3 hours in a wonderful setting with panoramic views. Despite the altitude difference of 343 metres, the good signage and the maximum altitude of 610 metres make it accessible and pleasant. Route No. 1 is more demanding, lasting about 2 hours, and leading to Tris Vrises fortress, a point that until the beginning of 2000 belonged to a military zone.
