Uncover the Cycladic identity, step by step
Silent, simple, and almost ancient, Sikinos reveals its charm through historic trails that once connected villages, fields, and chapels. Here, walking is a way to commune with the land. Rocky, desolate landscapes, ravines, and ruins host the most distinctive species of Cycladic flora, while dry-stone walls and sunlight accompany you to the sea.
The routes are well-signposted and mapped within the Sikinos Paths network, established under the Cycladic Identity programme of the Museum of Cycladic Art. The island’s network encompasses seven signposted trails, ranging from easy to moderate in difficulty, linking landscapes of exceptional natural beauty with archaeological sites, chapels, and traditional hamlets.
Download the dedicated application, or acquire a map from the kiosk in the Hora, and explore the island's unspoiled beauty with confidence.
Recommended routes
Hora – Alopronia: A gentle descent commencing from the Hora’s narrow lanes, culminating at the harbour. The vista embraces the open sea, fields dotted with dry-stone walls, and ancient farmhouses.
Hora – Zoodochou Pigis Monastery: One of the island’s most iconic trails leads to the 17th-century fortified monastery perched on the cliff's edge. The ascent is gentle, and the views are breathtaking, especially at sunset.
Monastery – Episkopi: A route blending nature and history. Amidst rocks and vineyards, the ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to Apollo Pythios emerge, upon which a Byzantine chapel was built.
Hora – Agia Marina – Mavros Kavos: A more challenging hike, revealing panoramic vistas of the Aegean Sea and surrounding islands. The trail culminates at a rugged coastline, where the land appears to dissolve into the light.
Pack light hiking gear and sufficient water, as there are no resupply points, and observe all safety precautions.
