West of the island’s capital, Mytilene, lie the Hot Springs of the Gulf of Gera, set in a privileged location among olive groves and overlooking the bay. The gulf itself was formed by major parallel geological faults that led to tectonic subsidence. Enjoy a soothing bath in the thermal waters, which rise from a depth of 2,500 meters at a temperature of 39.3°C, and feel the tension melt away. Here, the earth still breathes, heals, and rejuvenates.
Continue into the island’s interior and discover the traditional settlement of Agiasos. Built on the slopes of Mount Olympus (967 m), the second-highest mountain on Lesvos, the village is embraced by dense vegetation—cherry, walnut, and chestnut trees, among others—creating a fairytale setting. Wander through its narrow streets, meet the welcoming locals, relax at traditional cafés, and taste local delicacies, letting its authenticity charm you. Agiasos is also an ideal spot to enjoy views of Mount Olympus, a volcanic mountain with rich biodiversity and unique geomorphological features.
Further west, one of the most valuable ecological treasures of the entire Aegean awaits: the Kalloni Gulf Wetland. If you are passionate about birdwatching, Kalloni offers the opportunity to observe flamingos, herons, and many other migratory birds, as well as rare species, up close. Look for the specially designed observation hides around the shallow gulf to fully experience this unique ecosystem.
Head north toward the picturesque harbor of Skala Sykamnias. Here, the striking reddish lava flows steal the show, formed by the volcanic eruption of Mount Lepetymnos, the island’s highest peak, around 17 million years ago. Perched atop the volcanic rocks, you will see the seaside chapel of Panagia Gorgona (Mermaid Madonna), one of the most photographed chapels in the Aegean, gazing out over the sea—a place where the grandeur of faith meets the primordial power of nature. At the traditional tavernas and cafés of Skala Sykamnias, enjoy genuine Lesvian hospitality and savor local delicacies at their most flavorful.
Mithymna, or Molyvos, offers one of the most powerful experiences Lesvos has to offer. Climb up to the imposing medieval castle and let your gaze wander across the open sea. Walk through the labyrinthine cobbled streets, among stone-built houses and flower-filled courtyards. The village, one of the most beautiful in the Aegean, is built on a volcanic dome, formed by the rise of magma during the final phase of Lesvos’s volcanic activity, around 16.5 million years ago.
Just 11 km to the south, in Petra, stands Panagia Glykofilousa, perched atop an impressive rock that emerged as a steep outcrop due to the gradual erosion of the surrounding stones. Every year, thousands of pilgrims climb here to admire the beautiful chapel and offer their prayers. As you ascend the 114 carved steps, you’ll notice how geological phenomena have influenced not only the landscape but also the architecture and placement of this unique sanctuary.
Did you know that Lesvos also has its own “Blue Lake”? Between the villages of Pterounda and Chidira, the Vathylimnos Waterfall, formed along an active fault between ancient volcanic lava flows, captivates nature lovers with its wild beauty. The surrounding landscape offers the ultimate refuge of tranquility and coolness—a true sensory escape that you can fully enjoy.
Arriving in Sigri, a gateway to knowledge opens before you: the Lesvos Petrified Forest Natural History Museum. Its meticulously organized exhibition unravels the island’s and the Aegean’s geological history, offering a comprehensive museum experience for both young and old. Through precious fossils and modern scientific and educational tools, every aspect of the Petrified Forest is revealed, helping visitors understand how this unique natural monument was formed.
The most spectacular and well-preserved fossilized trunks of various tree species and sizes can be seen at the Bali Alonia Petrified Forest Park, a site pivotal to Lesvos’s inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. Awe-inspiring is the giant petrified sequoia, standing 7.02 m tall—the tallest standing fossilized tree trunk in the world. Walk among the fossils and feel time itself come to a standstill.
What you might not realize is that observing fossils on Lesvos isn’t limited to the land—it extends out to sea as well. The Nisiopi Marine Petrified Forest Park (39.21703480175705, 25.83806399852852) is the first marine fossil park established in Greece, with organized access and facilities for visitors. Here, you can observe fossils both along the coast and underwater through the glass-bottomed boat specially designed by the museum, which offers guided tours. While afloat, you’ll also explore the stunning marine landscapes shaped by volcanic activity and sculpted by the waves of the Aegean over millions of years.

In spring (April–May), temperatures are pleasant, nature is at its peak, and the light is perfect for capturing the beauty of Lesvos in magical photographs. The weather is ideal for hiking and exploring the island’s geological treasures, and it is also a prime season for birdwatching. In autumn (September–October), temperatures remain mild and the sea is warm, allowing you to combine your road trips with refreshing swims.
