The Acherodas River

Exploring the Mythical River of Epirus

In the mountains of Souli, at an altitude of 1,600 metres and just 2 km from the village of Glyki, the sources of the Acheron River emerge. The mythical river, flowing through landscapes of boundless serenity, eventually reaches the Ionian Sea near the area of Ammoudia.
The Sources of Acheron
Starting from Glyki, the crystal-clear waters of the river - rushing in winter and accessible in summer - wind through gorges and form turquoise lakes. The area, protected by the Natura 2000 network, hosts a rare ecosystem shaded by centuries-old plane trees and huge towering cliffs.
Trails and Hiking
To truly experience the Acheron River, one must walk along its banks. From the Information Centre of Glyki an easy trail leads to Skala Tzavelenas. Following the historic path of Souliotes, the visitor reaches the riverbank and the Cave of the Dragon, where gurgling springs emerge amid dense ferns.
The most impressive hike starts at Skala Tzavelenas and ends at the Souli Plateau (Samoniva village). This route is dominated by the imposing gorge and the arched bridge of Dala, which crowns the rushing waters on the white limestone rocks. At one point, the towering rocks narrow so much that they are reminiscent of a formidable gate; it is the legendary "Gate of Hades", which according to mythology led to the underworld.
Alternative Activities
Beyond hiking, the Acheron River is ideal for rafting, kayaking, horseback riding in the water and flying fox, offering a complete recreational experience in the heart of Epirus’ nature.
Visiting the Acheron River is not just an excursion, but a dive into history and myth, where natural beauty transforms the weight of the past into the joy of life.
