Gerolimni of Andros

A rare wetland on a Cycladic island

In the heart of Andros, nestled between the slopes of Kouvara and Petalo, Gerolimni lies quiet and protected. It is the largest natural lake on the island, formed by the waters of the River Achlas which descend with force during winter to create a small wetland teeming with life.
Its existence on a Cycladic island makes Gerolimni unique: a landscape of unexpected greenery, full of reed beds, oleanders, and wildflowers.
As you wander around the lake, you will hear the sound of frogs, the flight of herons, and the rustling of plants. Gerolimni is an important refuge for waterfowl and reptiles, as well as a multitude of insects that sustain the ecosystem. Species such as the little bittern, the common moorhen, and the Vanessa atalanta butterfly can be found here. The water remains pure, fed by underground springs and streams from the surrounding area.
Gerolimni can be accessed via a short path, ideal for those who love hiking. It connects to the road leading to the Monastery of Agia Marina and the famous Achla beach. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes and offers views of landscapes that constantly shift from the vegetation of the island to the open sea.
Combine your visit to Gerolimni with a stop at the Monastery of Agia Marina, known for its miraculous spring. Continue towards Achla beach, where the river forms small waterfalls before flowing into the sea. Shortly before the estuary, discover the stone-built Achla bridge, a 19th-century work that joins the two riverbanks. The bridge, with its characteristic curve and stone arch, is one of the most picturesque spots on Andros and is perfect for photography or a brief rest under the shade of the plane trees. It is a route that weaves together nature, history, and serenity in a unique environment.
