An Annual Tribute to the Battle of Salamis
Salaminia is held every Septembre in honour of the historic Battle of Salamis and is one of the island’s most important cultural celebrations. The festival features a wide range of events that blend history, culture, and tradition, including theatrical performances, art and photography exhibitions focused on the history of Salamina, concerts, athletic competitions, and traditional dances—creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere.
The highlight of the celebrations is the spectacular reenactment of the naval battle that took place in Septembre 480 BC in the straits between Salamis and Attica. At that time, under the leadership of Themistocles, the fleet of the Greek city-states confronted the much larger Persian navy of King Xerxes. Despite being outnumbered, the Greeks took advantage of the narrow straits and secured a decisive victory that changed the course of the Persian Wars.
An important site of remembrance is the Tumulus of the Salamis Fighters on the northern coast of Kynosoura. Commemorative ceremonies, wreath-laying events, and speeches are held there. The closing ceremony of Salaminia takes place at Salaminomachon Coast (Kamatero Beach), in the area of Ampelakia—a location associated with the gathering of the Greek fleet before the battle.
Closely connected to Salaminia is the Salamina Digital Culture Park, where visitors can explore the island’s history through modern interactive applications. There, you can enjoy an impressive 5D experience, featuring audiovisual effects that bring the naval battle to life, making you feel as if you are aboard an ancient trireme.
