Flour War in Galaxidi

A Carnival experience bursting with color, joy, and tradition

A colourful world of... flour awaits you during the Clean Monday long weekend in Galaxidi. The flour war (Alevromoutzourómata) is one of the most entertaining carnival customs in Greece. Full of joy and dance, it fascinates young and old. Throughout the three-day celebration, fires are lit and there are carnival dances, exhibitions, activities, musical events, culminating on Carnival Sunday, when the great parade of the carnivalists takes place. The Carnival King is burned in the harbour and the feast lasts until morning.
Clean Monday is the most anticipated day. At noon the carnival procession starts at the bridge while the municipality distributes bags of flour to participants. By the time it reaches the central square, where this joyous war culminates, everyone is covered in white flour, as clouds of powder fill the air in every direction.
The custom is believed to date back to the 19th century and was brought by Galaxidi sailors, who may have seen similar customs, probably on Sicily. Carnival season was the perfect time for celebration, as a farewell, before the sailors departed on their long sea voyages.
All participants dressed in carnival costumes or old clothes, with wigs and glasses, masks or sea goggles to protect their eyes, toss flour indiscriminately and dance to the sounds of traditional instruments. Don't remain a spectator: put on your old clothes, grab a bag of flour, and dive into this exhilarating tradition.
