A celebration of the land and tradition
One of the most authentic agricultural events of the Sporades is revived every July in Palio Chorio on Alonnisos: The ‘Alonismata’ (threshing). The re-enactment of threshing takes place in the historical ‘Alonia’ (threshing floors), where the locals used to beat bushels of wheat to separate the grain. Over the years, this ritual, a symbol of fertility and abundance, transformed into a cultural institution that connects the younger generation with the island’s agricultural roots.
During the Alonismata there is a live re-enactment of the traditional way of life of the island. The island's women, often members of the ‘IKOS’ Women’s Cooperative, prepare traditional dishes, breads, pies, and trachanas, a type of fermented cracked wheat, while the men set up the threshing floor, reviving the activities of ploughing and baling.
