The Vineyards of Nemea

Vines, wine and oenotourism in the Peloponnese

The vineyards of Nemea stretch across a landscape that shifts constantly with the light and the seasons: endless rows of vines, rolling hills, valleys and mountain slopes compose the largest wine-growing zone in Greece and one of the most recognisable on the country’s wine map. This is the birthplace of Agiorgitiko, the iconic red variety of Southern Greece, producing wines that range from fresh and fruity to robust aged reds and sweet dessert wines.
The PDO Nemea zone covers approximately 2,500 to 3,000 hectares and is defined by three altitude zones, each with its own microclimate and character. The soil—a mix of clay, loam, gravel and sand—retains essential moisture to nourish the vines, giving Agiorgitiko its many "expressions".
Today, more than 40 wineries operate in Nemea, ranging from large modern facilities to small family estates. Many are open to the public and offer organised tastings paired with local products, making the region a premier destination for oenotourism. Alongside Agiorgitiko, other varieties are cultivated, while the agricultural landscape is completed by olive groves and Corinthian currants.
Visit the wineries in September during the harvest, or during the "Great Days of Nemea" (Agiorgitiko Festival), featuring open doors, wine tastings and events throughout the region. Combine your experience with a journey along the Wine Roads of Corinthia.
