Culture and History Centre of Evrytania

A journey through the past with impressive digital applications

Why was the region named Evrytania? How is the Nile River connected to a mosaic floor in the village of Klavsi? What exactly is the treasure of Karpenisi? You will find the answers to these and many more questions at the Culture and History Centre of Evrytania, which was inaugurated in 2019 and is still evolving and being enriched.
Two halls facilitate this journey through time using informative signs and tablets. You will be captivated by the treasure of Karpenisi, a replica of a rare collection of Hellenistic-era women's jewellery, reportedly discovered in Karpenisi, as well as the cast of a statue of the god Dionysus, which was unearthed in a local field.
Learn about the unknown ancient fortifications and walls surrounding Lake Kremasta and be astounded by the stunning replica of the mosaic from the Early Christian Basilica of Aghios Leonidis, an important ecclesiastic monument in Klavsi. You may also find it deeply moving to view the replicas of the frescoes from the Byzantine church of Episkopi, which now lies submerged in Lake Kremasta.
The historical narrative continues through the Ottoman era, highlighting the scholars and the schools founded within local monasteries, the War of Independence of the 1821 and its heroes. Then come the Balkan Wars, the fallen soldiers of Evrytania, the destruction of Karpenisi by the Germans, the Civil War, and the impact of prominent locals and emigrants to the USA.
What truly sets this cultural centre apart is its embrace of the digital world, with three halls transporting you into the past through 3D projections. Here, you can learn about the stone bridges of Evrytania, experience the historic Battle of Kefalovryso through a VR headset, and take a 360° video tour of the Episkopi chapel, even underwater!
The Centre looks toward the future as much as the past, and, therefore, it hosts regular workshops for schools, where children can get hands-on experience with the arts of mosaic-making, engraving, and other traditional techniques.
