Ambelakia, Kissavos

A legendary village in nature’s embrace

The village of Ambelakia lies deep within the verdant beauty of the Aesthetic Forest of Kissavos, where the mountain slopes are covered by centuries-old beech, chestnut, arbutus, fir and oak trees. A short detour from the Athens-Thessaloniki National Motorway suffices to bring you to the cobbled streets of a settlement that became the stuff of legend in the 18th century.
In 1778, the first agricultural cooperative in the world was founded in Ambelakia, organising the production and trade of excellent red cotton wool, dyed using the Rose madder plant. The cooperative quickly acquired thousands of members and established 17 branches throughout Europe, resulting in economic prosperity that strengthened education: the village’s residents boasted a broad education, including foreign languages, while institutions such as the Hellenic Museum (1749) and Maniarios School (1773) established the village as a beacon of knowledge and progress.
Today, the stone-carved mansions (such as the famous Schwartz Mansion dating back to 1787, with its mural decorations and porcelain fireplace), fountains, bridges, the Folklore and Historical Museum of Ambelakia, Larisa (housed in Mola Mansion) and the Ambelakia Museum of the 1940-1949 Period tell a vivid story full of glamour and memory. A walk to the Church of Agios Georgios. George, with its unique depiction of the Saint enthroned and the wood-carved iconostasis, will reward visitors with unforgettable images.
The picturesque square, stretching under the shade of a centuries-old plane tree, serves as both meeting point and resting place, dotted with tavernas offering authentic local flavours. This is also the starting point of hiking trails that traverse landscapes of unique natural beauty: verdant gorges, chestnut tree forests, cobbled paths leading to Omolio, Spilia and the imposing Castle of Oria are surprise destinations for those seeking the authentic and unexplored.
