Historic Monasteries and Places of Deep Faith
Saint John the Russian (Agios Ioannis Rossos) is the major pilgrimage site of the area, drawing thousands of visitors to Prokopi each year in his honour. However, it is not the only religious monument in the region of Limni. Also deeply cherished by the faithful is the Convent of Saint Nicholas Galataki (Convent of Agios Nikolaos Galataki), home to a community of nuns, which overlooks the Evian Gulf from above. Built in the 16th century, possibly on the site of an ancient temple of Poseidon, it impresses with its fortress-like architecture, featuring an imposing tower. It houses sacred relics and a collection of religious treasures.
The third renowned pilgrimage site is the Monastery of Saint David the Elder (Monastery of Hosios David Gerontos) , where the faithful come to venerate the saint’s bones, believed to be miraculous. Founded in the 16th century on the site of an earlier church, it took its present form in the 19th century. Be sure not to miss the underground chapel of Agii Anargyri, carved into the rock and adorned with beautiful frescoes.
With stunning views of the sea, the Convent of Agia Irini Chrysovalantou is definitely worth a visit. Enjoy the scenery, chat with the hospitable nuns, and explore the old church of Archangel Michael within the olive grove, the protector of the area.
Three more sites with a strong spiritual atmosphere are the Skete of Hosios Christodoulos of Patmos in Limni, the chapel of Zoodochos Pigi, also in Limni, and the ascetic retreat of Hosios Andreas near the Galataki Convent.
