Chilia Dentra (Thousand Trees)

The protected forest of centenarian oaks in Kilkis

Approximately 4 km north of Lake Doiran lies the Forest of Mouries, known as Chilia Dentra. This lush 600-stremma (60-hectare) expanse constitutes a rare monument of nature, included in the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. Breathe in the fresh air in the heart of a wetland forest of Mediterranean type, which was recognised as a Natural Monument as early as the 1970s and is now being transformed into a model natural park of ecotourism interest and environmental education.
Admire the protagonists of the forest: the centenarian oaks, many of which exceed 200 years of life. Step into its heart and feel the serenity offered by this protected sanctuary of the flora and fauna of Kilkis.
Choose one of the paved paths that cross it and enjoy a comfortable hike. They have a total length of 2,155 m and it is worth noting that they are fully accessible to PWD, making the forest reachable for all visitors.
The infrastructure of the Information Centre guides you through your exploration, while a specially designed observatory allows you to view the forest from above and capture the landscape.
Nearby, you will encounter the village of Mouries and its waterfall, a water spectacle visible during the cold months. Chilia Dentra is a rare natural area of Kilkis, where you can experience first-hand the value of environmental protection. Leave behind the fast pace of daily life and invest in the spiritual peace offered by the embrace of the centenarian oaks.
