Vikos Gorge

Vikos Gorge

One of the Deepest Gorges in the World!

In the northwestern part of Zagori, between Ioannina and Konitsa, rises Vikos Gorge, the centrepiece of the Vikos-Aoos National Park since 1973. The route stretches from the traditional villages of Monodendri and Koukouli to the historic bridge of Kleidonia, offering a breathtaking spectacle.
A World Geological Monument
The canyon holds a record in the Guinness World Records, as it is considered the deepest in the world in proportion to its width. With a length of 10 kilometres, its depth exceeds 900 metres, while its opening at the narrowest point is only 1,100 metres. Its vertical rocky slopes and the crystal-clear waters of the Voidomatis River, which crosses it, make up a true monument of nature.
A Botanical Paradise
The region is one of Europe's most important ecosystems. Geographical isolation and special microclimatic conditions have allowed the maintenance of rare flora, with hundreds of species of herbs and flowers, many of which are endemic. The fauna is equally impressive, hosting endangered species such as the golden eagle and the wild cat, which find refuge on the steep cliffs.
Experience and Exploration
For adventure lovers, summer and early autumn are the ideal time to cross the gorge, always accompanied by an experienced guide. For those preferring panoramic views, viewpoints at Oxia and Beloi offer breathtaking perspectives of the canyon.
A visit to Vikos is not merely a hike, but an initiation into the wild beauty of Epirus, where nature displays its unparalleled power.
