Gorges of Ierapetra

Gorges of Ierapetra

Between the mountain and the sea

The area of Ierapetra, on the southern coast of Crete, stands out for its gorges, carved by the mountain massifs and leading to the waters of the Libyan Sea. The gorges of Ierapetra are a top destination for hikers and nature lovers, combining wild landscapes with unique experiences.
Most impressive is Ha gorge, a rare geological phenomenon with narrow crossings and waterfalls, that is 1.8km long. Hiking through it requires special equipment and experienced guides, while the scenic viewpoints around it offer sights of exceptional beauty.
Sarakina gorge, near Myrtos village, is the most accessible. The route, about 1.5km long, passes between enormous rocks and small waterfalls, offering an adventure experience of moderate difficulty in a natural environment.
For those looking for an easier hike, Mylonas gorge, near Koutsounari, leads to an impressive waterfall that is dozens of metres high. The route is 1.5km long, brief, and easy, ideal for families and visitors who are not particularly experienced.
The gorges of Ierapetra highlight the variety and wild beauty of southern Crete. From demanding Ha gorge and the more approachable Sarakina gorge, to easy Mylonas gorge, each route offers a different challenge and sights that are ideally combined with resting on the beaches or stopping in villages in the area.
