Steep rocks, endless blue
In Sfakia, between the wild mountains and the deep blue sea, Aradena Gorge, one of the most impressive gorges of Crete, splits the land in half. Its starts at Lefka Ori (the White Mountains) and the entire route is 15km long, but most visitors start their descent from the abandoned mountain village of Aradena, reaching the end of the route 7km later, at the beautiful beach of Marmara, with its distinctive pebbles. From there, the hiking trail continues to Loutro or Hora of Sfakia, or you can take the small boat. Whatever you prefer, blue waters and small tavernas are there to offer you respite.
The metal bridge that connects the two sides of the gorge offers one of the most impressive views of southern Crete. If you dare, this is where you can try the famous Aradena bungee jump, which is the highest in Greece (138m). The activity requires compliance with all safety measures and guidance from certified professionals.
Even if you do not intend to attempt it, it is worth standing on the bridge and seeing the landscape that stretches out below: the steep rocks, the sparse vegetation and, in the distance, the endless blue of the Libyan Sea. To descend the gorge, it is recommended you hire an experienced guide.
Live the Aradena experience and let the nature of Sfakia enchant you.
