An underground world sculpted by nature
Skyros has an equally magical world in store for you beneath its surface. Along its steep coastline, the sea has carved out dozens of sea caves, which are some of the most impressive geological phenomena of the Aegean. These formations are thousands of years old and were created by the continuous erosion of the limestone rocks, which was the result of their constant interaction with the wind, the waves and tectonic forces.
Some are more than 30 metres deep and in several you will see a wealth of marine life, with Neptune grass (Posidonia oceanica), sponges, and small populations of fish that find shelter there.
Many of the caves were once used as shelters for fishermen and merchant ships. The wild rocky landscape embraces the blue of the Aegean Sea, to produce postcard-like landscapes.Â
You can reach the sea caves of Skyros by private boat or on organised day trips starting from the port of Linaria. Most tours include stops for diving in small coves. The experience is often completed with a small traditional treat on the boat – ouzo, salad, olives, and local cheese, reflecting the simplicity and hospitality of the Skyrian land.

- Pentekali, on the northern coast, is the most famous. Its name comes from the five openings (pente, meaning five) that allow light to flood the interior, creating a magical range of colours.
- Diatrypti, on the eastern coast, is an impressive natural arch inside the rock, where light passes through the water and transforms the interior into an underground mirror.Â
- Gerania is located near the cove of Achilli and it stands out for the sound of the waves reverberating within it, creating an almost musical sensation that is unforgettable.
- The small caves of Pefkos and Agia Fotini are not as well known, yet equally impressive, ideal for peaceful explorations with a canoe or SUP.
