Festivals of Syros

From animation and classical music to rebetiko and tradition

Syros is an island with a deep cultural identity and a multi-faceted arts life. Throughout the year, and especially during the summer months, it hosts festivals that combine its historical heritage with modern forms of art. Ermoupoli, with its neoclassical buildings and the iconic Apollon Theatre, becomes abundant with high-level musical, theatrical, and audiovisual events.
Animasyros, one of the largest international animation festivals in Europe, holds a special place in the island's cultural calendar. Every September, creators, students, producers, and animation fans meet on Syros for screenings, competition sections, workshops, and presentations. The festival takes place across various venues of the city, from Apollon Theatre to Pallas Cinema and Miaouli Square for open-air screenings, giving the island a dynamic, international character. Simultaneously, it offers educational programmes for children and young people.
Syros also hosts the Festival of the Aegean, an important annual classical music event that has attracted international orchestras, conductors, and opera artists since 2005. Concerts, operatic works, and musical collaborations are presented at the Apollon Theatre and in venues with unique acoustics.
Other events, such as the Syros Jazz Festival, the Rebetiko Festival ‘The Syra of Markos Vamvakaris’, the Syros International Film Festival (SIFF), and the summer traditional music festivals in the villages, complement a programme that covers the entire spectrum of the arts. This cultural mosaic forms an experience that combines the urban heritage of Ermoupoli with the daily life of the Cyclades.
