Chios escapes the narrow limits of the summer destination, as its traditions spread throughout the year. Local events are linked to maritime history, medieval heritage and religious faith, and will offer you unique experiences. Get into their rhythm and discover the richness of Chian culture.
Winter: Christmas – New Year
The winter season begins with customs that praise the naval tradition of the island. On New Year's Day, the most characteristic custom is the Santa Claus Ships. Groups of children and young people build impressive ship models, which parade and compete on the waterfront of the city, accompanied by traditional "praises" (songs) and wishes. It is worth admiring them and feeling the pulse of Chian seamanship, which remains thriving over the centuries.
Spring: Carnival – Easter
This period brings together the most spectacular and experiential events of the island. Carnival begins with the Carnival of Mostra in Thymiana, where the Medieval Wedding and the satirical Talimi are revived with dances and representations from the Genoese era.
In the mastic villages, such as Kalamoti, on Clean Monday, the satirical Aga awards humorous "justice", while Kardamyla is dominated by Moutsounaries, a game of disguises and flour-throwing.
Easter culminates with the Rocket War that takes place every Resurrection in Vrontados. In many villages "bonfires" are set up for the burning of Judas, while in the central square of Hora there is the meeting of the Epitaphs, accompanied by the traditional "bobakia" (firecrackers).

Summer is the season of religious festivals and agricultural production. Numerous festivals take place in all villages, with plenty of food, live traditional music and dances that last until the morning.
In Mastichochoria there are also events dedicated to the par excellence local product, known as the Mastic Festival, with tasting and cultural events.
