One of Greece’s first folklore museums awaits you in the heart of Skyros: Faltaits Folklore & Ethnological Museum. It was founded in 1964 by writer, journalist, and researcher Manos Faltaits (1924-2017), who dedicated his life to gathering artefacts from all over Greece, and who transformed the museum into an ark of Greek folk culture.
The museum is housed in a 19th century mansion that exudes the tradition and history of the place. Here you will find a rich collection of more than 10,000 objects that reveal the daily life, customs, and traditions of Skyros and Greece. Its historical archive includes rare manuscripts, centuries-old books, newspapers, engravings, and maps.
Each room holds an experience that brings the past into the present. Exhibits include one of the largest and richest collections of traditional agricultural and livestock tools, as well as works of art by Skyrian creators — traditional costumes, textiles, ceramics, and woodcarvings— which bear witness to the evolution of local folk art.
During the summer, Faltaits Museum hosts periodic exhibitions of paintings, theatrical performances, concerts, and literary evenings, attracting artists and visitors from all over the world. The cultural heart of Skyros beats in its courtyard overlooking the Aegean Sea.
