The Villages of Apokoronas

The Villages of Apokoronas

A green plain, authenticity, and genuine hospitality

Between the Lefka Ori mountain range (White Mountains) and the Cretan Sea lies Apokoronas, one of the greenest and most fertile areas of Crete. This land invites you to experience the authentic side of the island through its villages, with olive groves, orange trees, and springs that flow all year round. The mild hinterland, the traditional hamlets, and the people who keep the customs and flavours of the land alive, compose a landscape that exudes peace and hospitality.
In Vamos, the old stone houses have been restored with respect for the local architecture; small guesthouses, tavernas and kafenia (traditional coffee houses) give the village vitality. In Fres, with the plane trees and running waters in the village square, time seems to slow down, while in Gavalochori the Folklore Museum, arches, and the art of kopaneli (a unique type of lace) await you. Vrises is a reference point for locals and travellers. The village is cool, with plane trees, running waters, and tavernas offering local flavours.
Apokoronas has a developed network of hiking trails that you can tour with certified guides. Travelling by car between the villages is equally enjoyable, with stops to explore the alleys, eat, or enjoy a coffee or a raki (pomace brandy) under the trees. From here, it takes no time at all to get to Lake Kournas and Georgioupoli, combining the mountain and sea in a route full of constantly interchanging images.
