The picturesque village of Lafkos

Tradition, nobility and authentic Pelion beauty

Lafkos, a traditional Mount Pelion village without cars, with stone-carved mansions, cobbled streets, cool fountains and centuries-old plane trees, is a much-overlooked “diamond” in Southern Pelion. The olive groves in the background complete the charming scenery that enchants visitors. Apart from the picturesque and placid scenery, you will be impressed by the magnificent view of the Pagasitic Gulf, as the village is built amphitheatrically on a hill, overlooking the village of Milina and the islet of Alatas.
At the heart of the village square, under the shade of plane trees, the oldest café in Greece, the historic Kafeneion Forlida, has been operating continuously since 1785. Its tables have seated great personages of Greece, such as the writers Alexandros Papadiamantis and Kostas Varnalis. Enjoying a richly tasteful, aromatic Greek coffee here becomes a historical experience.
At Lafkos, the local fountains have their own names, such as Paliovrysi and Chatzovrysi. After drinking deep from their gurgling water to cool off, you should visiting the village’s traditional bakery, offering fresh, delicious bread. The building, designed by Italian engineer Evaristo de Chirico, is a jewel in itself; it was intended to serve as a railway station, but the railway never reached that far.
Upon arriving in Lafkos, visit the Fampio Museum, dedicated to the artist Thanasis Fampas, and the extremely interesting Radio Museum, housed in an old mansion dating back to 1890 with exhibits donated by philhellene Wilfried Schoeps.
If you are a nature lover, you can hike along the paths leading to Agios Konstantinos beach in Paltsi or towards Milina. This corner of Mount Pelion offers walks among olive groves, rich history and pleasures to delight the senses. Visit Lafkos, a destination that will win you over at first sight.
Access: Lafkos is located in Southern Pelion and lies 54 km from Volos. To get there, follow either the coastal road through Milina or the mountain road through Metochi. Since it is a car-free village, it is accessible only on foot, after parking your vehicles on the edges of the village.
